Brief Synopsis Of Music Video

As our Audience Research concluded, our target audience would most like to see a 50/50 split between a performance and narrative based music video.
Below is a brief synopsis and a few ideas of what the narrative part of our music video could consist of:

A young couple, say in their 20's who are in love and predominantly the concept is to show several visuals of them just being in love and doing couple-ly things. This may consist of holding hands, kissing, spinning round in each others arms, hugging and playing around with each other such as tag. I think that these kind of ideas will create an impression for the audience that they are in love and the audience will easily be able to relate to the theme of the music video of being in love.

Lyrics

Here are the lyrics for our music video from our chosen song, Upstream by The Next Forever:

I'd learn to read for you
so I could tell you all the stories
of when the boy gets the girl
and I'd plant a seed for you
and I'd sit
and I'd watch it grow
and I'd wait for it
to blossom to a flower
and I'd treasure it
and tie it in your hair
I'd swim upstream for you
and I'd kiss you in the crashing waves
I'd swim upstream for you
just to tell you that I need you
and I never want you to change
I'd build a town for you
so you might come and stay
I'd show my love to you
with the actions I do
day by day
and I'd take my time
to show you that I care
it might take a while
but it's the best that you've heard yet
I'd swim upstream for you
and I'd kiss you in the crashing waves
I'd swim upstream for you
just to tell you that I need you
and I never want you to change
please don't change no
please don't change no
please don't change no
please don't change
I'd swim upstream for you
and I'd kiss you in the crashing waves
I'd swim upstream for you
just to tell you that I need you
and I never want you to change

Skills

Digital Technology

What can you do with a digital video camera?
Skills I have adapted whilst doing the A level Media Studies course using the a digital video camera include setting up the camera for use, understanding the use of all of its buttons (record, playback, fast forward etc). I have developed an in depth understanding of the process of recording off the video camera and picked up a lot of skills throughout the course that have enabled me to create high quality media productions.

What sound recording techniques do you have?
When it came to sound recording, I have learnt the most effective use of sound recording is that off the actual camera itself. The handheld cameras had a built in microphone which proved effective when recording simple productions such as preliminary tasks, interviewing candidates as part of our audience research and shooting our thriller opening sequence the previous year. The main production this year of the music video Kenny and I were able to use the big Sony HDV 1000E camera. This had its own detachable microphone which was of a higher quality enabling us to record sound clips needed in places of the music video such as the start.

What skills did you develop using Final Cut?
Final Cut and Final Cut Pro allowed me to pick up a lot of useful editing techniques. Having only previously used Imovie on apple macs, I was new to Final Cut but after last year when we received a lecture from a professional who came into my college to give us tutorials, I quickly developed a basic understanding of the program. Using the program more and more often when doing smaller tasks as well as main projects throughout the course has enable me to improve quickly and start doing more complicated editing techniques such as sectioning in which we used in parts of our music video.

Did you use a digital camera (photographic)?
I used a digital camera when taking pictures for locations in part of the pre production stage of both the music video and the thriller opening sequence. I took a variety of different shots during both visits, developing an understanding of interesting shots and also experimenting and understanding the cameras uses and tool buttons.

What skills do you have?
The main skills I have developed throughout the 2 year course that I feel have proved most useful is the ability to picture in my mind a particular camera shot and create ideas that would make interesting shots. I have picked up skills when it came to location scouting and found that having a basic knowledge of the local area proved very useful. My communication skills and contacting skills have also improved throughout the two years, but particularly in this year. My communication skills were put into practice when contacting several people in the industry about locations, advice on the music video production and when sorting out our chosen artist and communicating with him through social networks and email about arrangements.

What were the good and bad things about the software and hardware at AS? In the AS yea the main software we used were Imovie for preliminary tasks and Final Cut Express for the main thriller opening sequence production. The good aspects of Imovie is that it is very convenient for quick capturing of footage and for simple, yet effective editing. This proved useful when doing the preliminary task. One negative aspect about Imovie is that its editing options are quite limited and basics, particularly when it comes to transitions and titles. Final Cut Express had some really good uses and gave a professional feel to our finished product. The program is very good for doing complicated and professional looking editing techniques. However one bad thing about Final Cut Express is the fact that when you first use it it is quite hard to navigate around and get to grips to the uses of each tools etc. However after a few sessions you can confidently use it.

Creativity
How creative were you at AS? When we shot our Thriller Opening Sequence we tried to be as creative as possible to make our product interesting and effective. We used interesting camera shots such as the reflection of a car mirror and putting the camera in under the bonnet of the car and opening the bonnet. We also used a handheld camera when portraying the view of the "killer" in the sequence to create a shaky and frantic scene. When it came to location choice we considered several ideas but we choose to go to the most isolated location of an abandoned railway as this would be a typical spooky setting as such found in a thriller opening sequence.

Research and Planning
What techniques did you use? Using primary research such as watching films I was able to annotate and observe recurring themes and connotations that featured in thriller opening sequence. Obtaining these generic conventions I was able to think about what conventions I could incorparate into my thriller opening sequence and which aspects were most interesting. For audience research we primarely used microsoft word to compose a questionnaire to hand out people. We also used the internet for several uses such as institutional research and research into real and similar media products.

What would you improve? We had an issue where in one particular shot during the car scene you could see me filming the clip in the reflection of the car window which creates a senses of unprofessionalism. I think I would have also tried to incorporate more thriller conventions the opening sequence.

How did you use Internet? We used the internet when it came to uploading new posts of pre and post production work onto our blog. We also used websites such as youtube to upload rough edits of our music video and preliminary tasks to receive feedback from the youtube community about our videos. We used social network sites and emails to contact certain people in the music industry which proved a useful skill to have

Post-Production
How did you organize your editing?
What techniques did you use? Be specific about precise SFX, transitions, sound bridges, graphics....
What about post-production for your evaluation? What might you improve?Using conventions from real media texts
It is impossible to create an entirely original media text.
What conventions did you follow? Did you subvert any conventions?
How did you create meaning for the audience? Through film language and editing?

Human Traffic - Effects model

How can Human Traffic be a metaphor for the media effects model of media?

The Effects Model of media is a theory that suggests that consuming particular media products influences audiences behaviour and mentality. In the case of Human Traffic, as stated in my last essay on " do you think Human Traffic glorifies drug use" I think it depends on the type of person you are. If you are an easily impressionable person then yes, Human Traffic could influence your behaviour and mentality for the worst in the case of drug use and society. However if you are less impressionable then Human Traffic is merely covering a era in which drug use, music and the rave culture were very popular. Some might argue that Human Traffic is a prime example of the effects model with suggesting drug consumption throughout the film and glorifying its positive effects. However throughout the how film, no drugs are actually shown being consumed other than alcohol. For example when Jip and Coop are talking to each other with the camera looking up at them through a glass table and Coop is separating two lines of what we assume are drugs. They never actually are shown consuming the drugs so some people may argue that the film is not actually an negative example of the effects model. In my opinion I would say that Human Traffic could be considered an example of the Effects Model in media, as it suggests the consumption of drugs which could influence impressionable members of the audience.

How do you think media will be treated by law in the future?

I think that the government will have a strict crack down on the suggestion of drug use and the amount of glorification of drugs in media products such as films. Having watched films such as Human Traffic and Train spotting, where drugs are described as "imagine the best orgasm you have ever had... now times that buy a 100 and you still won't be near the sensation that a fix of heroin gives you".

I think that these sort of films will influence people into trying drugs that they before having seen the film, would never have dreamt about. Recently on music channels there have been regulations put in place to blur out drug use, including alcohol as young teenagers are heavily influenced by their favourite band idol. This means that less teenagers will see the drug consumption and think " if my idol takes drugs, it must be good!" so there will be a reduction in consumption of drugs, which will benefit society. I think that in the future films, magazines, television promotions will all be screened and the government will try to keep the glorification of drugs to a bear minimal buy enforcing that drug consumption will not be shown or that if it is it will be blurred out.

Human Traffic

Do you think Human Traffic encourages or glorifies drug use?

Human traffic is comedy/drama/music film that revolves around 5 main characters and their love for music and drugs. Throughout the film the predominant feature is the use of drugs, which ties in with the rave culture of the 1990's. Not only are the main characters taking drugs, but the majority of the people who are at the clubs and house parties in the film. This suggests that drug use in the 1990 era is very popular. Each of the main characters express their love for the weekend and the majority of them hate their jobs and are living for the weekend. During the film this is continuous reference to the effects that the drugs have on the characters mind and body and is quite informative. However the information mainly focuses around the positive effects of ecstasy such as being able to dance for hours and feeling confident when talking to other people. There is reference to the "come down" after taking the drug which puts drug usage in a more negative appeal. The films main scenes were set in the club and house party in which drugs such as ecstasy, cannabis and alcohol are consumed. The way both the camera angles, flashing lights, loud music, intense colours and fast paced editing are used creates a sense of being in the characters shoes and experiencing what they are.
Theories such as the "Effects Model" where mass media affects the way audience think and behave could be active in Human Traffic due to glorifying drug use and perhaps influencing some people. I personally feel that if you were quite an impressionable person, Human Traffic does glorify drug use and could perhaps persuade you to try them. I also think the film focuses on the positive effects of drugs rather than the health issues that come with consumption. For example a particular scene where Nina's brother is nervous about taking drugs and is set in a science laboratory lab where the teacher is outlining all the negative effects and Jip is telling him about the good effects and that in actual fact the risk of using ecstasy is very small. This could come across as a bit of a biased film and could perhaps include aspects of the propaganda theory if you are an easily impressionable person. However I really enjoyed the film and thought it represent the 1990's raver culture fairly.

John Butler Trio - Album Cover

There is an essence of smoke that surrounds john butlers face. The smoke could represent a number of things, for example in could represent the consumption of drugs such as cannabis. Cannabis consumption is often is stereotyped as hippies which is a social group/culture that are well known for dreadlocks, colourful clothing, drug use and peace making. This could represent the style of John Butler Trios album.
John butler appears to be wearing a hat that look like those of tribal leaders which gives a historical and spiritual feel to the artwork. This could be reflected by the power and culture of the music. The position of his face also reinforces this representation because it appears like it would do if it was on a totem pole. There are splotches of red on the album cover which could represent violence/war and this again could ironically reflect back to the hippie culture where peace is of great importance. This is reinforced by the guns coming out of John Butlers head at either side, creating a realisation to the viewer his opinion on war and violence. There is a butterfly towards the bottom of the artwork which connotes thoughts again of peace which seem to be a continuing theme throughout the artwork. The butterfly also could represent being close to nature, again reinforcing the idea of hippiness. The text is very simple, but effective in bold font and colours that stand out on the background. The black background is effective because it is neutral and calm, focusing the viewers attention on the artwork.

Jack Johnson - Inbetween Dreams - Album Cover

Jack Johnson - Inbetween Dreams

Predominantly the first thing that stands out when you look at this album colour is the bright golden/yellow background. Straight away this introduces a lot of symbolism that comes from connotations of the colour. Gold connotes thoughts so of luxury and riches. This could represent the music is quite well made and that the CD process involved a lot of money perhaps. The yellow tinge to the background connotes thoughts of summer. It could represent the sun which is a very powerful and important role in the circle of life. It could also represent the bright and summery colours of the flowers that are fully in bloom in summer. Both of these connotations could relate back to the music in the sense that the music is very summery and cheerful.

Another main feature in the CD cover is the tree on what appears to be a cliff. The tree could again symbolise the summer feel to the album as judging buy the amount of leaves on the tree it is in summer. Trees often symbolise family, faith and life, which again could reflect to the positive feel of the music. Trees are also the only living thing to continue to grow over its lifetime, which again Jack Johnson could be trying to represent his music in continuing to grow after this album. Also an article on Wikipedia about Jack Johnson and his music states that " The album cover depicts a mango tree, referring to the Mango Tree, the studio where In Between Dreams was recorded." The way he is picking a mango from the tree could also relate to being close to nature and this brings in genre guesses such as acoustic, and also perhaps create stereotypes of hippyness. Thecliff could perhaps represent a risk involved in the music in the sense that it might be a change from his previous material and that the risk is winning over a new audience but continue to maintain his older fans. The cliff connotes thoughts of height and heights could represent power. In this sense, this could represent that he is at the top of the world representing the huge amount of success he had.
Jack Johnson himself is making an appearance on the album front cover. He is shown with an acoustic guitar around his back representing the genre of the music and giving the audience a indication of what style of music the CD is without listening to it.
The text font is quite smooth and rounded and this could perhaps represent the calming/easy listening music that it is. His name is in black and the album name is in white. White connotes images of innocence and peace, and along with the name "inbetween dreams" it creates a happy feel about the CD.

Meeting - Editing, sectioning

A few days ago, I went around kenny's house to make some plans for both pre production and post production. We decided it would be best to shoot the narrative and the perfomance on different days as this means we could focus on both aspects and get the most out of each day without having to divide our time between Lewis and our actors and actresses. Things we discussed for the pre production part of things included editing techniques, organising transport for both the client, and ourselves, scheduling the date, time, location and meeting place of the video shoot. We also discussed his outfit that he would be wearing on the shoot and the what the actors and actress would wear on the day. We decided that a plain bright t-shirt such as green would be suitable and black jeans. This One editing technique we decided to use was sectioning the footage. We went out and filmed some random clips in Attlebridge and went back, captured the footage and then tried out sectioning the footage using the editing software Final Cut Studio. Here is the short video that we made to practice sectioning footage.

We used an application called "Motion" that our friend Rob managed to get a copy of on Kenny's IMac. This application allows us to edit masks that we created using Photoshop. We then took the Photoshop file with several layers and to create each section of the screen. We then used the separate layers as the mask and created several black square/rectangle and applied the footage on the top. Then you have to go on the compostion mode and apply the settings " travel matte - Luma". We then dragged and dropped our chosen piece of footage into each section, lined it up, perhaps shrunk it down a bit to fit in the section and then applied it. We then used the masks to make each section appear at a different time. Here is a picture of the sectioning process that we used to make our practice video.

Casting

Today Kennet and I released a casting call on a website called Star Now, which is a website designed for actors/actresses to find employment. We decided to do this because have decided to include a narrative in our music video consisting of a couple in love. Here is our post on the website:

Even though the post has been online for ten hours or so we have had a number of responses, 4 so far. We have contacted both an actor by the name of Chris Mulvaney and an actress called Karolina Pawlus. We decided to target these two because we thought they would be the best choice for our music video as they both have a lot of experience, they both seem really enthusiastic and also they are both models so will look good and be more natural due to being used to the camera. We first rang Chris but after 2 failed attempts of getting through to him we have decided to email him after leaving a voice mail informing him to expect an email. We successfully managed to get through to Korolina and talked through with her the details of the production and she seem genuinely very interested in being involved. She told us that she has had previous experiences in music video productions so she stood out as a good candidate for the actress in our music video narrative. Here is a picture of Chris and Korolina.

The Next Forever

After asking a few 4/5 pieced bands for their participation in our promotional pack for an unsigned band, we have experienced several problems. These included problems with distance and travel as some of the bands we target weren't very local. Also Different band members going on holiday at different times meaning that we were left with very few dates to get the production of the video done.
Kenny and I came to the conclusion to use a solo artist called The Next Forever, AKA Lewis Harold Wolstanholme. This is a 16 year old male from Kings Lynn who plays acoustic/indie style music. As I am in a band myself from the same area, we recently played a gig at the same venue and I saw him play his live set and was impressed with his music and thought he would be an ideal candidate for our project. We have emailed him expressing our interest in using him and to see if he would be interested.
Here is the email:

Basically next year what we have to do is create a promotional pack for an unsigned band or artist. So that means creating a music video, a digi-pack and a magazine advertisement or article.

Since we really like your music and think we could do a lot with it, we were hoping you'd consider allowing us to use 'The Next Forever' as our unsigned artist and creating you such materials.

We have to have shot the music video by the end of September, but we're hoping to getting it started literally as soon as possible. And we really hope you'd be up for it, we'll organise a photoshoot etc for the digi-pack and article probably sometime around the September/October mark as well.

Finally I'd like to point out this will all come to you for free, we won't be charging you. So you get a free promotional pack, we get a free artist to use for our A Levels, it's a bit of you scratch my back, we'll scratch yours sort of thing. But, just because it's a free opportunity don't think it's gonna be poorly made, as this goes towards our grades we'll be spending a HUGE amount of time on it to make it look as professional as possible and once we're done and our course is over the music video is free for you to use off your own back as and when you choose. :)

We look forward to hearing you. If it is a yes would it be possible for you to attach the lyrics of the three songs off your latest EP for us to make a more informed decision of which song to use and what we can do with the narrative areas of the music video.

Thanks

Emailing contacts in the music industry

Me and Kenny went to norwich and went to the music video festival in the forum. We met a guy from BBC Norfolk called Gary and he talked to us about good and bad points of music videos. We received a lot of good advice from Gary and he talked to us in great depth about the structure of music videos and what makes a music video good. It was very helpful and me and kenny will try and incorporate his advice into our music video. He also said that we could contact him for any help and so today me and kenny took him up on his offer and emailed him for location advice for our video. Heres the email that we sent him today:

"Hello,
We came to one of the music video workshops and you said you'd help us out with locations. We will be using the church that you mentioned for And The Winner Is...'s new video but for the A2 course we're filming Rules of Romance a music video and are looking for some low-fee locations (or preferably completely free) maybe some sort of abandoned warehouse or somewhere that would be willing to let us come and film for a day. Or if you have any other ideas that you might know that could be useful to suit the bands genre.
Any help is greatly appreciated,"

Gary has not replied yet.
We also emailed Jon stone who previously worked for the music video company sitcom soldiers who produce music videos that are typically well known for relatively low budget, appealing to smaller and upcoming bands. Here is the emailed we sent him:

"Hey,

Sorry to email you again, but I'm now getting deeper into Pre-Production of our A2 Music Video. We're looking for locations and contacting any of our contacts who might possibly know some good locations for a rock music video relatively local to Norfolk - and at a low fee, or preferably free!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again"

But Jon replied saying:

"Hi mate,
I haven't done any shoots in norfolk so can't help you i'm afraid. It's always juts to go for a wander, end up discovering places you didn't know existed."

Location Ideas

Today me and kenny have been discussing further ideas for location of our music video. Some of these ideas we discussed were

1) St George's Church in Norwich - We went into the city to have a meeting with the woman who runs the church and she said that we could use the church to film the music video. She said that we could use the music video out of hours that would cost £100 - £200 but she said we are more than welcome to shoot our video during opening hours. However this means that we could get strangers coming into the church when we are trying to shoot which could be quite strange in the video and might make it look unprofessional. But it's a more feasible option as it's free as apposed to the £100 - £200 quote.

2) West Raynham R.A.F Base - There is an abandoned R.A.F base in West Raynham that has two buildings that we could perhaps use to film our music video in. The wikipedia site for this is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_West_Raynham
However one problem with this is that Kenny and I are unsure as who to email to get permission to shoot there. Also it is quite a far way for the band to travel.

3) Pinewoods in Wells Beach - Kenny and I went on a location hunt on the beach yesterday (sunday) and walked through the pinewoods and found this clearing where it could be possible to film. The clearing is very light which is ideal for the music video as we will need little or no lighting. The location is very authentic and beautiful so we could create a powerful live performance/narrative based music video. One problem with this location is that electricity would be hard to get down there to use a CD player to play the track and for lights, however we could overcome this problem by using portable speakers or ipod docs and filming on a sunny day would overcome the light problem. Also we may need to consulate the beach wardens to see if they will let us do this.

Kenny and I are still looking for other possible locations and are emailing contacts in the music industry to see if they know of any locations.

Locations

Today me and kenny emailed Richard Cox who is the founder of creative norfolk. We emailed him to see if he had any ideas for locations such as abandoned warehouses or studios that we could use for our music video as from my research I have carried out these locations are quite typical for music videos of the similar genre. Here is the email we sent him.

Paramore - Emergency

Paramore - Emergency

Paramore are a rock/alternative band from franklin. They have released 3 albums under the label "fuelled by ramen" and the song emergency is off there début album. The music video was directed by Shane Drake who has also done many of the bands other music videos. The band is made up of 4 males and a female lead singer.
The location is in an abandoned warehouse which stands out as quite a conventional setting for music videos of a similar genre. The video structure is part narrative and part live performance, which is a similar structure to the Francesqa video of "ghosts". This could suggest that both narrative and live performance structure and an abandoned warehouse location are both conventions of this genres music videos.
One of the shots that stands out to me is the close up of the female singers lips. Her lips shows evidence of makeup and hence glamour, which could appeal to a male audience. There quite a lot of slow motion action shots of the band's live performance, and the use of slow motion has been made apparent in many music videos I have researched of the same genre so I will try to include this feature in my music video. They are headbanging and swinging guitars suggesting that they are a very energetic band and put on an interesting live perfomance.
The makeup and costumes the band are wearing are quite strange, perhaps resembling that the band are unique. They are wearing smart clothes and a dress in the female singers case and they all had cuts and bruises on the face/bodies. This could be based around the narrative of the story and also represent the name of the song - Emergency, which connotes thoughts of danger, pain and blood.
The narrative is based around a director coming into the room and telling them to follow him. Then he is shown directing a video for them and ordering them about. This could represent that they were pushed about a bit in the music industry and felt quite vunerable, especially because of there young age (the eldest was 19 at the time, the youngest 15). This is reinforced by their confused and almost scared facial expressions as they walk through the studio to shoot their video, with the uses of jump cuts to switch between members and show their worried look.
Their actual live perfomance is very energetic which makes the music video exciting and fast paced. I think this is a good effect so when I come to shooting my music video I will try and make the band perform at an energetic state. Close ups of the lead singer have been made quite dominant with a high proportion of shots based on her rather than other members of the band. This could be because it is seen that the lead singer is the most important, or perhaps that because she is female she is focused on more, perhaps to appeal to a female audience.
The relationship between visuals and lyrics have not been made very apparent in this song. Perhaps the closest to which is the recognition of "love dieing" with a shot of the female singer alone and looking depressed in an arm chair, perhaps representing that she is sad because she has lost someone she loves.
The relationship between music and visuals is a bit more apparent and features aspects such as visuals cutting in time to the music. It also has slow paced editing when the section of the music is more calm and slow, and alternatively fast paced editing when the music is fast and energetic, especially as featured in the chorus.
