Jack Johnson - Inbetween Dreams - Album Cover
Jack Johnson - Inbetween Dreams Predominantly the first thing that stands out when you look at this album colour is the bright golden/yellow background. Straight away this introduces a lot of symbolism that comes from connotations of the colour. Gold connotes thoughts so of luxury and riches. This could represent the music is quite well made and that the CD process involved a lot of money perhaps. The yellow tinge to the background connotes thoughts of summer. It could represent the sun which is a very powerful and important role in the circle of life. It could also represent the bright and summery colours of the flowers that are fully in bloom in summer. Both of these connotations could relate back to the music in the sense that the music is very summery and cheerful.
Another main feature in the CD cover is the tree on what appears to be a cliff. The tree could again symbolise the summer feel to the album as judging buy the amount of leaves on the tree it is in summer. Trees often symbolise family, faith and life, which again could reflect to the positive feel of the music. Trees are also the only living thing to continue to grow over its lifetime, which again Jack Johnson could be trying to represent his music in continuing to grow after this album. Also an article on Wikipedia about Jack Johnson and his music states that " The album cover depicts a mango tree, referring to the Mango Tree, the studio where In Between Dreams was recorded." The way he is picking a mango from the tree could also relate to being close to nature and this brings in genre guesses such as acoustic, and also perhaps create stereotypes of hippyness. Thecliff could perhaps represent a risk involved in the music in the sense that it might be a change from his previous material and that the risk is winning over a new audience but continue to maintain his older fans. The cliff connotes thoughts of height and heights could represent power. In this sense, this could represent that he is at the top of the world representing the huge amount of success he had.
Jack Johnson himself is making an appearance on the album front cover. He is shown with an acoustic guitar around his back representing the genre of the music and giving the audience a indication of what style of music the CD is without listening to it.
The text font is quite smooth and rounded and this could perhaps represent the calming/easy listening music that it is. His name is in black and the album name is in white. White connotes images of innocence and peace, and along with the name "inbetween dreams" it creates a happy feel about the CD. Wednesday, 8 September 2010
Meeting - Editing, sectioning
A few days ago, I went around kenny's house to make some plans for both pre production and post production. We decided it would be best to shoot the narrative and the perfomance on different days as this means we could focus on both aspects and get the most out of each day without having to divide our time between Lewis and our actors and actresses. Things we discussed for the pre production part of things included editing techniques, organising transport for both the client, and ourselves, scheduling the date, time, location and meeting place of the video shoot. We also discussed his outfit that he would be wearing on the shoot and the what the actors and actress would wear on the day. We decided that a plain bright t-shirt such as green would be suitable and black jeans. This One editing technique we decided to use was sectioning the footage. We went out and filmed some random clips in Attlebridge and went back, captured the footage and then tried out sectioning the footage using the editing software Final Cut Studio. Here is the short video that we made to practice sectioning footage.

Below you can see our first initial treatment plan that we made in the meeting.
We used an application called "Motion" that our friend Rob managed to get a copy of on Kenny's IMac. This application allows us to edit masks that we created using Photoshop. We then took the Photoshop file with several layers and to create each section of the screen. We then used the separate layers as the mask and created several black square/rectangle and applied the footage on the top. Then you have to go on the compostion mode and apply the settings " travel matte - Luma". We then dragged and dropped our chosen piece of footage into each section, lined it up, perhaps shrunk it down a bit to fit in the section and then applied it. We then used the masks to make each section appear at a different time. Here is a picture of the sectioning process that we used to make our practice video.

Casting
Today Kennet and I released a casting call on a website called Star Now, which is a website designed for actors/actresses to find employment. We decided to do this because have decided to include a narrative in our music video consisting of a couple in love. Here is our post on the website:

Even though the post has been online for ten hours or so we have had a number of responses, 4
so far. We have contacted both an actor by the name of Chris Mulvaney and an actress called Karolina Pawlus. We decided to target these two because we thought they would be the best choice for our music video as they both have a lot of experience, they both seem really enthusiastic and also they are both models so will look good and be more natural due to being used to the camera. We first rang Chris but after 2 failed attempts of getting through to him we have decided to email him after leaving a voice mail informing him to expect an email. We
successfully managed to get through to Korolina and talked through with her the details of the production and she seem genuinely very interested in being involved. She told us that she has had previous experiences in music video productions so she stood out as a good candidate for the actress in our music video narrative. Here is a picture of Chris and Korolina.

The Next Forever
After asking a few 4/5 pieced bands for their participation in our promotional pack for an unsigned band, we have experienced several problems. These included problems with distance and travel as some of the bands we target weren't very local. Also Different band members going on holiday at different times meaning that we were left with very few dates to get the production of the video done.
Kenny and I came to the conclusion to use a solo artist called The Next Forever, AKA Lewis Harold Wolstanholme. This is a 16 year old male from Kings Lynn who plays acoustic/indie style music. As I am in a band myself from the same area, we recently played a gig at the same venue and I saw him play his live set and was impressed with his music and thought he would be an ideal candidate for our project. We have emailed him expressing our interest in using him and to see if he would be interested.
Here is the email:
Basically next year what we have to do is create a promotional pack for an unsigned band or artist. So that means creating a music video, a digi-pack and a magazine advertisement or article.
Since we really like your music and think we could do a lot with it, we were hoping you'd consider allowing us to use 'The Next Forever' as our unsigned artist and creating you such materials.
We have to have shot the music video by the end of September, but we're hoping to getting it started literally as soon as possible. And we really hope you'd be up for it, we'll organise a photoshoot etc for the digi-pack and article probably sometime around the September/October mark as well.
Finally I'd like to point out this will all come to you for free, we won't be charging you. So you get a free promotional pack, we get a free artist to use for our A Levels, it's a bit of you scratch my back, we'll scratch yours sort of thing. But, just because it's a free opportunity don't think it's gonna be poorly made, as this goes towards our grades we'll be spending a HUGE amount of time on it to make it look as professional as possible and once we're done and our course is over the music video is free for you to use off your own back as and when you choose. :)
We look forward to hearing you. If it is a yes would it be possible for you to attach the lyrics of the three songs off your latest EP for us to make a more informed decision of which song to use and what we can do with the narrative areas of the music video.
Thanks
